Work Shift
Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching plus five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities for a total of 45.5 hours/week for each of two 16-week semesters.


The Natural Sciences Division at Pasadena City College (PCC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Physics/Astronomy Instructor commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year. The primary teaching responsibility is forphysics lecture and laboratory classes that serve STEM, allied health, and non-STEM majors. The instructor may also teach introductoryastronomy classes.We are looking for a collaborator with a passion for increasing the success, retention, and completion rates of students in our program.

    RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY INSTRUCTOR:
  • Teach classes inPhysics
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-majorstudents
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of thecurriculum
  • Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities forstudents
  • Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes.? Use the results to improve teaching andlearning
  • Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular facultymember
  • Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriateactivities


    PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of high impact practices to increase student success and completion ofcommunity college degrees or certificates.
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented andunderserved
  • Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities andabilities
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learningstyles
  • Demonstrated awareness and/or implementation of effective course assessment techniques.
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campuscommunity
  • Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation andoutcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritizedstudents
  • Excellent written and oral communicationskills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learningtechniques



    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Master's degree in physics, astronomy or astrophysics
    OR
    Bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy AND Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics
    OR
    the equivalent
    Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.


    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A passion for teaching physics lecture and laboratory at the community college level to a diverse student body, the majority of whom are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences
  • Demonstrated experience in developing lower division physics lab curriculum
  • Evidence of developing alternate modes of teaching physics
  • A strong desire to transform and improve STEM education in general, and physics education in particular
  • Experience working collaboratively on curriculum development
  • Experience engaging students through student-centered and innovative instructional approaches such as project-base learning, community-based learning, and contextualized learning
  • A passion for teaching astronomy lecture and laboratory at the community college level to a diverse student body


    THE ASSIGNMENT:
    Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August 2023.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Successful completion of livescan clearance and TB Screening
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical examination
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109
